The Tham Pha Ta Phon Non Hunting Area is situated in Ban Moong Sub-district, Noen Maprang District, and 14 kms. away from the district seat and 85 kms. away from the provincial seat. The general geographical aspects are limestone hills with steep cliffs. The mountain itself is a horse-shoe shape and 236 m. above MSL. There are small plains in the valleys and has two rivers which runs through it and has water all year round. This is considered to be rare in Thailand and the highest average temperature is 35 degrees Celsius and lowest at 18 degrees Celsius.
Intersting Natural Attractions
Tham Naresuan Cave is a limestone cave 300 meters deep. Tham Naresuan Cave is an attractive cave with stalagmites, stalactites, lime plaster walls and strange pillar formations. There are many bats varieties and was announced a Natural and Environment Heritage Site on 7 November 1989.
Tham Rua Cave is a large cave 1,408 meters deep and is called Tham Rua (Boat Cave) because a formation resembling an overturned boat can be seen on the ceiling.
Tham Tao Cave is a small cave and only 75 meters deep. It looks like a big hall and its name Tham Tao (Turtle Cave) is due to the fact that there used to be lots of turtles living inside.
Tham Lod Cave is a cave born of dissolving limestone 227 meters deep and 80 meters above MSL. There are intersecting waterways both from the stream in front of the cave and the stream within the cave itself.
Tham Pha Daeng Cave is a big water channel 105 meters deep and 90 meters high. Originally, it was called Tham Nam Pueng (Honey Cave) due to the huge bee hives inside. The current name Pha Daeng (Red Cliff) might be from the red colour at the opening of the cave which most probably is Hematite.
Tham Karng Kao is a spacious cave through a steep incline entrance. It is dangerous and difficult access and contributes to the untouched pristine nature inside. There are stalagmites and stalactites and strange formation pillars.
Fossil Point is where 360 million years ago a sea was covering this area with many living organisms.
Japanese Script Point is a place where legend has it that during World War 2 the Japanese Army camped here and inscribed puzzles on the rocks.
