The old steam locomotive over 100 years old is a symbol narrating the story of transportation in the past era which was the beginning of the age of trains. On 24 January 1907, Phitsanulok Railway Station first commenced its steam locomotive route of Phitsanulok-Bangkok to transport passengers and cargo. Large consignments of rice were transported for sale in Bangkok and in 1919, in the reign of H.M. King Rama V, the E-Class Steam Locomotive no. 181 was commissioned for the first time and is the locomotive standing proud in front of this Phitsanulok Railway Station.

The Phitsanulok Railway Station was constructed at the same time with the Northern Railway Route. It is situated at the site of the Black Tank which is the water tank used for filling up the steam engine in those days which is south of the current station.
Later, it suffered irreparable damages from the Japanese army’s air attacks of machine guns and bombs and was not anymore operational.
The current railway station was constructed to replace the former after the 2nd World War in 1945 and has been in service since then. The Phitsanulok railway station is 389 kilometers away from Bangkok Central Station and was the top earning station in those days from highest passenger turnover. It was considered to be an important station as well as being the regional hub.
The importance of this route which was planned to go through Phitsanulok was due to the fact that in the reign of H.M. King Rama V, Thailand was encountering political and economy difficulties from the British Empire and France’s plans of expansion in the region. They were seeking transport connections to Yunnan, South China and especially the British, who was planning a railway line to connect India with South China through Burma and the lower northern region of Thailand. Therefore, the Thai Government assigned Hermann Gehrts, the then Governor of the State Railway Authority to survey and plan the northern route and chose the route from Pak Nam Po through Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, Lampang, Lampun until Chiang Mai totaling 450 kilometers by expecting economic returns from this route.
